French investors keen on investing in Balochistan: envoy

QUETTA: Balochistan has great potential in the minerals, agriculture and fisheries sectors and an improved security environment will attract French investors in the province, Ambassador of France to Pakistan Martine Dorance said on Wednesday.

Ms Dorance is currently on a Balochistan tour along with French Embassy’s Head of the Economic Department Philippe Fouet and other diplomats.

During a meeting with office-bearers of the Quetta Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry and media persons, Ms Dorance said over 40 French companies are working in different sectors with an investment of $3 billion in Pakistan while an investment of $1.1bn has been made in Balochistan’s Uch Power Plant.

She said Pakistan and France enjoying good bilateral, cultural and trader ties and with the passage of time these relations will further strengthen, she said.

The envoy said French companies are interested in investing in power, water treatment, transport and other sectors in Pakistan.

French development agency AFD is providing resources for green energy related projects. France is also working on solar- and hydro-electricity projects and is providing resources and technical know-how, Ms Dorance added.

Referring to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), she said: “It is a mega project in which China is making huge investments in energy and communication sectors.” She said CPEC would bring a very positive change in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan.

The ambassador said French investors would consider the offer of the Chamber regarding investment in water, energy and garbage recycling sectors.

She assured the chamber that efforts would be made for giving representation to small traders’ organisation in the Pakistan-France Business Alliance.
