KARACHI: The Pakistan Biscuits and Confectionery Manufacturers Association (PBCMA) urged the government to withdraw 40 per cent duty on the import of sugar, besides withdrawing Rs13 per kg rebate on its export to bring the commodity at the level of fair competition.
In a statement, PBCMA Senior Vice-President Raees Ahmed said there was a significant decline sugar prices on the world markets and confectioners were fast losing the export markets due to unjust import duty and export duty on sugar.
He added that the benefits of price reduction had not been passed on to domestic and industrial consumers because of huge tariff protection to the sugar industry. The sugar mill owners have found an opportunity to monopolise and cartelise by way of increasing the prices unilaterally by Rs10 per kg to Rs62 per kg from Rs52 in a short period of time, the PBCMA claimed.
