Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan has given assurances to the poultry industry that the government will take up its problems on a priority basis and help the sector exploit its true business potential.
Speaking to media on Thursday at the inauguration of International Poultry Expo 2016, organised by the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) at the Expo Centre Lahore, the food minister said the government was aware of the duties, taxes and other challenges faced by the poultry industry and would work on them in the light of the association’s recommendations.
He emphasised that they were striving to provide a level playing field for all industries and create a win-win situation for the country and business. “The poultry industry’s contribution in this regard has always been encouraging,” he said.
Different businesses displayed their products and services at the expo organised with the theme “Avian health, management and marketing solutions”. The participating companies included vaccine manufacturers, grandparent breeders and poultry equipment manufacturers. Earlier, PPA Founding Chairman Khalil Sattar decried that the poultry industry was facing heavy losses because of the increasing input cost, pushed up by higher import duty and sales tax. The industry has to pay 11% in taxes amounting to Rs220 on 50kg feed.
Sattar pointed out that 3% import duty was being collected on seeds for agricultural crops including vegetables while the duty on poultry seed production sector comprising grandparent and parent stock, and hatching eggs was 16%, 21% and 21% respectively.
