SAHIWAL: Punjab has so far exported around 80,000 tonnes of potatoes to eight countries Russia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Qatar, Oman and the UAE since December 2015.
Talking to Dawn on Thursday, Punjab Minister for Agriculture Dr Farrukh Javed said that around 0.196m tonnes of potato were exported last year and the target was revised to 0.3m tonnes for this fiscal year.
The province is set to produce a bumper crop this year as the cultivation area has risen by 3.8 per cent to 400,000 acres over the previous year.
Last year, the province produced around 3.84m tonnes of potato while an export surplus crop is expected this year as well, he added.
Responding to a question, he said that the government was trying to introduce a strong supply chain mechanism, where potato growers will be linked with exporters.
The minister said the government was providing Rs1.183 billion subsidy to farmers for procuring modern machinery.
