CJ refuses to form Judicial Commission on Panama Leaks

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Anwer Zaheer Jamali on Friday refused to form Judicial Commission over Panama Leaks as requested by the government letter.

In reply to the government letter, the Chief Justice said that the TROs provided could take so many years to be completed.

“Supreme Court needs the specific list of individuals, companies and groups which are required to be investigated by the Judicial Commission”, Chief Justice asked in his letter.

If all information is provided then we can consider going ahead, the letter stated.

“Once the Supreme Court receives further details from the federal government, it will consider the request to form the judicial commission”, the chief justice was quoted as saying in his reply to the government letter.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had written a letter to the chief justice last month seeking the formation of the judicial commission to probe the issue of Panama Papers.

The Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) government has been facing immense pressure from opposition parties since the massive leak of tax data from Panamanian Law firm Mosack Fonseca.

The leaked data revealed offshore business interests of several world leaders, their friends and members of their families. Names of prime minister’s children also appeared in the data, stirring up a political storm in Pakistan.
