ISLAMABAD: The pro-rector of Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) has been terminated from service after his doctoral thesis was found to be plagiarized up to 72pc.
The Comsats Board of Governor, which met here on Friday, terminated the services of pro-rector Haroon Rashid, as Preston University has already withdrawn his PhD degree on June 6 for plagiarism.
During the last meeting, the BoG after suspending Mr. Haroon, had directed him to appear in next meeting on Friday to present his point of view but he didn’t turn up as he was stated to be in the US.
As a result, the BoG decided to terminate his service as PhD is a pre-requisite for pro-rector position.
Interestingly, Mr Haroon is also Chief Executive Officer of National Testing Service- a private entity, which was initiated by Comsats.

Sources said during the meeting the role of NTS also came under discussion, however, it was decided its fate would be decided later on.
Despite repeated attempts, Rector Comsats Dr Junaid Zaidi could not be approached for his comments.
However, sources privy to the meeting say the government mulled to take over NTS, because it was started by Comsats- a government run university.
Higher Education Commission had pointed out heavy plagiarism in Mr Haroon’s doctoral thesis. Subsequently, the Preston University, which had awarded the degree on June 6, withdrew it.
