LARKANA: Larkana police have finally resolved a blind double murder case that had left them groping in the dark for three months.
Nine suspects arrested and several others interrogated since the April 17 murder of a woman and her daughter had been trying to distract the investigation by making false claims and hiding facts, Headquarters SP Tauqeer Mohammed Naeem, who headed the investigation told Dawn on Sunday.
Irshad Begum, 40, and her daughter, Sawera, 14, were gunned down in Bakhshal Taheem village, situated in the Nasirabad area of Qambar-Shahdadkot district. Ms Begum’s nephew, Inayat Mallano, had lodged the murder FIR against nine suspects.
Three of the suspects were arrested and interrogated whereas Ms Sawera’s elder sister, Ms Sanam, and many other relatives, including their father, Mohammed Ibrahim (a police head-constable), had also been questioned to reach the culprits.
The SP said that during the last three months, the investigators were misguided by all suspects as it was a tactfully-planned murder of Irshad Begum at the hands of hired killers. Ms Sawera was caught in the firing.
The SP said that the investigators went through the victims’ mobile phones data which brought Ms Sanam in the limelight. Her statements finally helped the investigators to solve the blind case, he added.
“The mastermind of the murder conspiracy turned out to be head-constable Ibrahim, who got his wife, Irshad Begum, eliminated for honour suspecting that she had helped their daughter, Benazir Mallano, in contracting a court marriage with Sikandar Thaheem. Ms Sawera sustained fatal bullet wounds while trying to save her mother,” said the SP.
The police officer said that Benazir Mallano might have been declared a ‘Kari’ (a woman liable to be killed by her close relatives for having an extramarital affair) but she had escaped from the village with her husband. Ibrahim, along with some other members of the Mallano community, plotted to get his wife killed [by hired killers] and implicate his opponents [some members of the Thaheem family] in the case through his nephew, Inayat, so as to escape suspicion, he added.
Rasool Bukhsh Shaikh, the investigating officer (IO) of the case, said that its was actually Ms Sanam who unveiled facts which were tallied with the mobile phones data and statements of three out of the nine nominated suspects, Koro Khan Thaheem, Salahuddin Thaheem and Gul Mohammed Abro, who were later arrested.
The three suspects then conceded that they had hired Akhtiar Lar, a professional killer who was allegedly involved in 14 cases of heinous crimes and declared absconder in eight such cases, said the IO.
SP Tauqeer said that the head-constable had since been suspended and arrested and Ms Sanam shifted to Karachi because she was receiving threats for revealing the facts. He said the whereabouts of Ms Benazir and her husband Sikandar Thaheem were not known to the police but they were hopefully safe.
