ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday accused Europe of double standards over what he said its silence over hanging of Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Bangladesh.
“If you are against political executions, why did you remain silent to the execution of Motiur Rahman Nizami who was martyred a couple of days ago,” Erdogan said in a televised speech in Istanbul,” AFP news agency quoted the Turkish leader as saying during a televised address.
“Have you heard anything from Europe? … No. Isn’t it called double standards?” Erdogan said.
Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Bangladesh on Thursday following the execution of Nizamit on Thursday.
The Jamaat leader was handed down capital punishment by a disputed tribunal set up by Hasina Wajid’s government.
He was charged with genocide and other crimes committed during a 1971 war of independence.
