KARACHI: At least seven police personnel were martyred when unidentified armed men targeted their mobiles in Orangi town on Wednesday.
Rescue sources said, in the first incident, armed militants targeted mobile of Pakistan Bazaar police station near Bangla bazaar. The gunmen attacked the van from the back. At least four cops were injured in the attack.
Minutes later, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police mobile near Disco Mor, injuring three policemen.
The injured were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where all seven cops were pronounced dead on arrival.
The policemen received multiple gunshot wounds, hospital sources said.
Police sources said the police mobiles were deployed for the security of polio team.
Anti-polio campaign has been halted in Orangi town.
Emergency is declared at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal confirmed that two separate firing incidents had taken place.
Siyal said; “Three of the policemen were on guard duty accompanying polio workers. These policemen have laid down their lives to save the polio workers.”
He confirmed that the polio vaccination campaign has been temporarily halted in Orangi Town.
DG Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar and IG Sindh Police A.D Khawaja visited the site of the incident.
IG Police announced Rs2 million and job in the police department each for the heirs of the martyred police officials.
He also announced Rs5 million for providing information about the culprits involved in the attack.
