Security beefed up along Pak-India border

Security in Pakistan along the border with India has been beefed up after a terror alert, warning of a possible attack by the Taliban at the border crossings was issued.

The Counter Terrorism Department in Punjab has sent out a memo to the chief secretary that Taliban were planning to target the Wagah or Ganda Singh border in the province between August 13 and 15, The Indian Express reported on Wednesday.

It claimed that two suicide bombers had been tasked by Mullah Fazlullah, the fugitive chief of Taliban hiding in Afghanistan, to attack the Independence Day parade at the border points. “Extreme vigilance and heightened security measures are suggested to avoid any untoward incident,” the CTD said.

The steps are taken in the wake of an attack on a hospital in Quetta on Monday that killed at least 70 people, most of them lawyers, while over 100 others were injured.

In 2014, at least 55 people were killed and over 120 were injured when a suicide bomber struck the flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah border.
