KARACHI: Unknown gunmen shot dead social activist Khurram Zaki on late Saturday night, Geo News reported.
Zaki was targeted at a tea shop in north Karachi where he was sitting along with two other men.
Four men on two motorcycles opened fire on Zaki and his companions and fled the scene. Zaki was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment and later shifted to a private medical facility where he succumbed to his wounds.
The two other injured are being treated at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police have found over dozen bullet casings from the crime scene and sent them for a forensic test.
Rangers were also present on the crime scene.
A spokesman for the Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) party has confirmed that Zaki lost his life in the armed attack. The MWM has announced a day of mourning on Sunday.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) condemned the killing, demanding immediate arrest of the murderers.
“Khurram Zaki’s murder is condemnable. Incidents of targeted killing are occurring in spite of on-going operation in the city,” said the MQM’s Coordination Committee in a statement.
