ANKARA: Turkey needs a new constitution and the government´s most important mission is to change the constitution and bring about an executive presidency, incoming Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Sunday.
Yildirim made the comment at a special congress of the ruling AK Party where he is the sole candidate to become leader of the party, and therefore premier.
Yildirim is a longtime ally of President Tayyip Erdogan, who founded the party and has repeatedly called for an executive presidency.
He said the European Union needs to end “confusion” about its migration policies and Turkey needs toknow how the bloc thinks of it.
Binali Yildirim also told a special congress of the ruling AK Party that Turkey would continue regulations to improve human rights and democracy whether or not EU membership happens.
Yildirim, a longtime ally of President Tayyip Erdogan, is set to become the next head of the AKP, and therefore premier, at the congress on Sunday, replacing Ahmet Davutoglu who announced plans to step down this month after weeks of public tension with Erdogan.
