WASHINGTON: The US State Department has confirmed that it is offering visas to some Bangladeshi bloggers on humanitarian grounds.
The department’s deputy spokesman Mark Toner told a briefing in Washington that these were the bloggers who faced imminent dangers in their country because of their views.
“For some of these individuals who are under what we believe is imminent danger, they can pursue under those circumstances a request from the Department of Homeland Security to consider something we call humanitarian parole,” he said.
Mr Toner said that recent attacks on secular bloggers in Bangladesh were “obviously of great concern” to the United States. Several bloggers were killed in those attacks.
“We’ve offered assistance to the Bangladeshi government, collaboration on the investigations, FBI assistance,” he said.
Mr Toner noted that some media reports linked those attacks to Al Qaeda. “These are horrific attacks. We urge the Bangladeshi authorities to take them very seriously and to fully investigate these attacks and to support the families of the victims,” he said.
