KARACHI: World Music Day is being observed worldwide on Tuesday, June 21. It is a day of free events to celebrate the universal language of music.
Conceptualised in 1976 by American musician Joel Cohen, World Music Day or Fete de la Musique is celebrated on June 21 every year.
The philosophy was to have all-night music celebrations during which amateur and professional musicians were encouraged to perform on streets and hold free concerts.
First practiced in France, World Music Day is now celebrated in most of the countries around the world.
The term World Music, no matter how much it has caught on today among the cognoscenti, was a marketing invention by the music industry in the 1980s to describe traditional music of any culture.
Which means that it includes Celtic music from Irish band Lunasa and Chhebi music from Moroccan group Lemchaheb to the baul songs of Madan Bairagi from Bengal and the qawwali of the Sabri Brothers from Pakistan.
