American Muslims answer this question with the most absurd things they’ve been asked, and the result? Hilarious and heartwarming.
Vox teamed up with The Secret Life Of Muslims, a series which documents the life of American Muslims, directed by American filmmaker Joshua Seftel and featured the second video in their series titled, “What does it mean to be Muslim? There are 1.7 billion answers” on their Facebook page.
In the video, some of the most ridiculous questions which stood out (for obvious reasons) were: “Are you allowed to have sex in Ramadan”, “I bet you like to hump goats” — wait, whaaaat? –, “If I’m planning to blow anything up”, “Aren’t you hot?”, “Why are you guys like that?” and the best one yet, “Oh, you guys can laugh, you guys can smile?”
To dispel the misconception people have about Muslims, the people are then asked, “What is a Muslim?”. Though the most basic answer is: “People that follow the Islamic religion and beliefs and the Oneness of God, and that Muhammah (pbuh) is His messenger,” some of the answers prove that everyone’s faith and belief differs in various ways.
For example, “A Muslims is anyone who says he’s a Muslim. Nobody in Islam gets to say who is and who isn’t a Muslim. God is the one who determines that.” it’s really just as honest and simple as that.
“The one who submits to God, to peace.”
According to one woman’s father, “A Muslim is any person who surrenders to a force greater than himself.”
Now that’s something to think about.
