COLOMBO: Two years after democratically electing the country’s new president, Maithripala Sirisena, Sri Lanka finds itself under the shadow of Mahinda Rajapaksa once again as the former president has made it his new year resolution to topple the government.
“When I said I would defeat Prabhakaran I did it. I have the same confidence now. I will be back to govern Sri Lanka. We can topple the government,” the former President told the Foreign Correspondents Association last week referring to his ambitions and that of his supporters who call themselves the opposition.
The joint opposition consist of dissidents of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and representatives of minor political parties who were with the then government under Rajapaksa.
