WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama used his New Year message on Saturday to project the achievements of the outgoing administration while president-elect Donald J. Trump availed it to taunt his political opponents.
“Twenty million more Americans know the financial security of health insurance. Our kids’ high school graduation rate is at an all-time high. We’ve brought 165,000 troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, and took out Osama bin Laden,” said Mr Obama in a message released by the White House.
“Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!” Mr Trump tweeted.
Mr Obama also highlighted the nuclear deal the United States and five other world powers signed with Iran among the major achievements of his eight-year rule.
“Through diplomacy, we shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons programme, opened up a new chapter with the people of Cuba, and brought nearly 200 nations together around a climate agreement that could save this planet for our kids,” he said.
Mr Obama, however, did not mention his parting gift to his Russian President Vladimir Putin, the decision to impose sanctions on Russia and expel 35 Russian diplomats for allegedly manipulating the 2016 US presidential elections. Mr Trump sided with Mr Putin in this dispute, praising the Kremlin leader for not expelling US diplomats from Russia in retaliation.
