Wenger confirms Mertesacker out for ‘few months’

LOS ANGELES: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed that veteran defender Per Mertesacker will be “out a few months” with the knee injury which prevented him from joining the Gunners’ North American tour.

In a press conference ahead of Thursday’s Major League Soccer All-Star Game in San Jose, Wenger indicated he’d be looking for a way to compensate for the absence of the German World Cup winner, who picked up the injury in last Friday’s friendly at Lens. “We should look for an option, of course, to get a bit more experience,” Wenger said.

The Frenchmen indicated some of his young center backs would see time on Thursday, but he would also be looking to bolster the squad. “With Per being out, we are a bit short on experience and we are looking to bring somebody [on the transfer market],” he said.

Calum Chambers is Arsenal’s most experienced center back in the States for matches against the MLS All-Stars and Chivas of Mexico.

As far as other areas of the field, Wenger confirmed that new signing Granit Xhaka and US international Gedion Zelalem would see time against the MLS All-Stars. “We are asked to do a job. We are under pressure every time to win the game,” Wenger said. “We play to win and we want to win as always with style and respect of our identity and values … that’s what we do.

“We know, in fact, that that the history of this game is in favor of MLS because from what I’ve heard, they have won in former seasons,” he said.

The MLS team has won seven of the 11 versions of the All-Star game since the format of playing an invited club was adopted in 2005. “They have won the games most of the times,” Wenger said. “We know we face a very determined and motivated team.”
