LAHORE: Three-year-old bay colt Wild Card outclassed his rivals to register his maiden victory in annexing the Khalid Bin Waleed Cup during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.
The pair of bay fillies, Profitable and Red Caviar, led the field followed on heels by Wild Card but as they turned their heads toward the straight, Wild Card surged into the lead to land the cup winning by a big margin of over four length from both of them in the event run over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres.
Owned by Shahid Hussain, the winner was given a confident ride by jockey Aamir Pervez to give season’s third victory to trainer Haji Abid Mahmood.
Lahore Race Club (LRC) steward and former governor of Punjab, Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud gave away the cup soon after the race.
A race earlier, Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud’s owned three-year-old bay filly Shooting Star showed an impressive turn of speed to land the November Cup run over 1,000 metres
The 25 to 100 favourite filly in a star like bright performance beat another filly Catelleya by two lengths in race run on a very fast pace. Bay colt Admiral’s Walk and bay colt Road Runner completed the frame among nine runners.
Ridden by Bilal Ahmed and trained by Shahid Rehman, the winner clocked 59 4/5 seconds over the race distance. The jubilant Makhdum received the cup from senior steward Masud Pervez escorted by LRC secretary Shahzad Akhtar.
Bilal later rode bay filly Babe The Pari in the sixth and the last race to complete his personal double, the sole distinction of the day’s racing.
In an improved performance, dark-bay colt Top Shot ridden by Alam Sher, managed to sweep over 60 to 100 favourite filly Qalandari (S. Raza up) by half-a-length. Qalandri was first slow at the start and then when she moved on Raza was not seen vigilant enough on the stretch running and lose the race by half-a-length. Tauqir Ahmed-trained Top Shot had by that time a quick shot at the finish line in the third race.
The turf accountants and the punters shared the day’s proceeding on even terms when three well-backed winners came to the fore in a card of six races.
